I thought this guy was flirting with me and then he called me buddy and gave me a high-five so clearly I can’t tell.

I actually think the opposite. If a woman is touching and being overly friendly on teams, they are flirting.

Some men are completely clueless, but women know what they are doing every time.

The touching is real and I do NOT touch anybody at work. If I did you can be SURE I wanted to sleep with them. I've touched one person, total. Yes, I wanted to sleep with him. No, I did not.

Look, some people are just super friendly at work and even outside of work. I have one coworker who is super friendly and is kind of the "glue" in a big group of work friends. Always willing to lend a ear after hours, etc. But he's just friendly and does this with everyone.

I think touching is the biggest clue. But obviously especially in this day and age with remote work and me too nobody's doing too much touching at work. But if you're looking for excuses to hug the person besides the usual one arm hello and goodbye hug...that's a huge clue.

Unfortunately, it's impossible to tell without touching.

When in doubt, just assume they are not flirting.

I'm a guy, and in my experience I could not always tell. If they are repeatedly coming to my desk/office and it is not work related I interpret that as a sign of interest. The few times I acted on their flirtation in this manner my intuition was correct.

Other times, women may have smiled or been friendly, but if I didn't follow up or pursue there's no way of knowing if this is a false positive -- they were being friendly but not flirting.

If you aren't sure, treat it as being friendly.

I find it hard to tell when someone is flirting. I wish there were clear signs.

How do you know if someone is flirting at work and not just being friendly?
