Yep. If you’re a white female it doesn’t matter which school for college acceptance.

Yeah you won't get in. 4.3 GPA no longer gets a white female in UVA unless you play soccer.

I don’t care about elite college acceptance, I am more concern about college readiness and having peers that will make her feel included.

For what it’s worth, my 3 went to WL and did a mix of AP and IB classes, attend/attended UVA and said the IB classes prepared them better for college than AP classes.

This. The IB classes are tough but they prepare you very well for college. I do think the size and focus of the high-achieving cohort at W-L is better because of the IB program. DD has taken a mix of AP/IB (it's our zoned school) and the IB classes have definitely been the most challenging.

She's also in band and the band community is very friendly. I was chatting with a parent at an event this fall who has a freshman in the band. She said she had been a school band director in several places and was really impressed at how nice and welcoming the W-L band was. Her DD was really enjoying it. From her HS experience, my DD made continuing band in college a big priority in school selection.

This is true about the IB program preparing students better for college, which is why Yorktown is implementing the AP capstone program. More info is here:

Adding that Yorktown is adding in the 2 year AP Capstone program starting this coming year which should be an excellent program especially for those wanting to prep for college.

She is fine with IB or AP, She just wants classmates that are academically focused and the best prep for her major (probably politics or history)

You will get both- at Yorktown kids are pushed hard by their parents, they have tutors/extra prep classes, etc as money is no issue. The W&L IB program is full of super motivated kids and/or parents who pushed them to be there.

Your consideration should be IB vs AP/standard curriculum. Not dubious school rankings or word on the street.

Both school have smart, motivated students. If she wants IB, go to W-L. If she wants AP or to stay with her friends, go to YHS.

Who is everyone in this case? I would listen to the rankings over the word of a couple parents you know.

We live in Arlington and are zoned for Yorktown but DD will likely be accepted to IB at WL.

She is a strong student, not an athlete, likes things like band and model UN at our APS middle school.

Yorktown is ranked higher on Great Schools and USNews, and our friends in FFX all think Yorktown is the more academic school in APS

But word on the street from neighbors is that WL more academic and Yorktown is all about sports — so not sure what it’s like for a non sporty student like DD.

WL seems to have better college placement at elite schools, but folks have been telling me it’s because it’s a much more diverse student body, more first gen students — more URM hooks than Yorktown rather than caliber of school.

On top of this, WL is growing 200 students a year for the next 3 years as they fill that addition, so I wonder how that will change the character and function of the school? But everyone says if you want the best academics it’s WL hands down?
