Umass suffers as a flagship because it is expensive in-state, and it is surrounded by a zillion private schools in New England. The profile of the student body has gotten a lot better since I was looking at colleges in the mid '00s.

Admit rate was 36% this year, that’s pretty competitive

It really depends upon the particular major or particular college or school within each university as to which is the best school for a certain applicant.
