The cheapest option, because a PhD in the Humanities isn't going to generate a lot of income. And if money is not an issue, then visit both and choose based on vibe.

Also, stop dumping on the happy parent with the Oxford kid - it takes a lot to get in, and they are understandably proud. It's an anonymous forum, it's all right to boast.

Your kid will need to work closely with 1-2 profs, preferably doing a thesis of some sort, so that s/he can get strong recs for graduate programs. Either school can work - go where DC feels most comfortable and perhaps look at faculty and whether any have similar overlapping interests who might serve as advisor/mentor.

I know PhDs who have attended both. I think the question is where will your kid do best? The environments are very different. They want to go where they'll be inspired to do well.
