If you want to stay a little outside of Lisbon, we spent a few days in Cascais and really enjoyed it - little beachside area, a train ride away.

In Lisbon, we stayed by the castle - I wouldn't recommend our Airbnb but the location was pretty great.

I highly recommend staying in Pousadas. They are old convents, castles, palaces, etc. converted to hotels and run by the goverment. We stayed in three or four of them several years ago and they were awesome.

We're staying in Principe Real in Lisbon. We wanted to be close to the action but not necessarily neck deep in it, hopefully in a place that retains some of the local flavor.

We stayed in the Alfama in Lisbon and it was a great location.

Mentioned this in an earlier thread but we loved Condes de Azevedo Palace in Porto. It’s a renovated 17th century palace with a lot of character. Fabulous location and breakfasts. We had a two story, two bedroom apartment with laundry (washer and drying rack) and a kitchenette.

I've stayed in the Lisbon Martinhal property and it was awesome. We had a kitchen, living room, two baths, separate sleeping area for the kids, etc. Plus a full service hotel and a great breakfast. So it was all in all far better than an Airbnb apartment. If they have availability, grab it.

We stayed in an Airbnb through Lisbon Smart Stay and I highly recommend them - they were so responsive and helpful. We loved where we stayed in the Alfama, which is the older part of Lisbon fairly near the Castle. My friend who is from Portugal suggested looking in the areas of Rossio (where the train station is), Alfama, and Castelo for our first stay. We walked everywhere (prepare for constant hills no matter where you are) and loved it all - Barrio Chiado would be nice to stay in as well. Barrio Alto is fun to go to but probably not so much to stay in as a family.

In Porto we stayed in a boutique hotel on Rua do Almada that was really lovely and great for the three of us but I think we'd have had to add another room if there were four. That was away from the water and the bridge to Gaia/port houses but again we walked so much it didn't matter and it was a nice quiet relaxing place to come home to yet still felt close to great restaurants and the main sights.

Rick Steves does a good job breaking down the areas if you want to research.

We stayed along the river in Porto, hotel, and it was nice to walk to all of the shops and dining options along the river. I don't think I would personally want to stay 'up' in Porto, the Hills are crazy and I found that most of the action is down by the river.

In Lisbon we stayed just a block or two from The Elevador de Santa Justa. We only walked by it and the lines were crazy. We were positioned close to the square where all the tutus pick up, which made it easy for a scenic ride.

I don't know who you are or what your interests are. So I don't feel qualified to tell you where you should stay. I do feel qualified to tell you that when I was planning, I found the Google and the Youtube to be very helpful. Anywhere down in the guts of the city will probably work. Unless you have a reason to want to be in a more suburban locale. At this point I'm guessing it's take whatever the best airbnb you can get for the price you're willing to pay is the correct answer.

I can't help you with Portugal but this is what I do:

Research things I want to see, do, and eat. Mark them on my google map.

Then pull up google hotels (or airbnb or booking.com) and search for your dates. Book near what you want to see, do, and eat.

Fun fact: When you use the booking.com app to book, you tend to get a 10% mobile discount.

Traveling in June, which area is good for finding an airbnb in both these places? Traveling with a HS and a MS.
