I have two kids at two different DCC schools. One has an IEP and the other a 504. They take AP and IB classes. They have received their supports.

They’ve always gotten the classes they need to get, like the right English, math, history, and science class.

The handful of times they haven’t gotten the class they wanted, it was electives - so instead of say, cooking they got film or weight lifting.

It’s nothing like Wilson in that regard. I don’t know why they can’t get their scheduling together there. I’ve heard stories of kids getting out in completely wrong math classes and it doesn’t get worked out for weeks at which point the kid will be behind in the class. That’s not acceptable.

There are classes my kid would like to take that their HS doesn’t offer (Latin, certain HL IB courses), but no problems getting their choices out of the ones they do offer.

Two kids went through MCPS. Each had one issue with not being able to get an elective that they wanted and ended up in a “random class that I don’t want to take.” In both cases, DC ended up really enjoying the class.

No issues with core classes.

No problem at all. In fact, my freshman who wanted to switch to an AP course and another elective at the beginning of the school year didn't have an issue. She's at Seneca Valley.

4 years at Einstein and never not gotten a requested class

Three kids in MCPS and never a problem. Even the time one of mine needed some changes (IEP related), it happened right there in the meeting.

MCPS has students do course selection in Dec/Jan, then they assign staffing and sectioning around student selection. For the majority of courses it isn't a problem to get what you requested. Some electives are over-subscribed and they have to limit enrollment. If a course is under-enrolled, they may cancel it. Students requesting changes during summer or in fall may not be able to get into a course if they are full or because the schedule has a conflict.

My kids and everyone I know of, have no problems with course selection and ability to get such classes.

We are an incoming DCPS parent at Jackson Reec and the chat about getting classes seems worrisome. It seems like it’s messy and there are lots of errors. To be honest it seems like a full-time job to figure it out. Are you happy with how courses are assigned and chosen in MPS high schools? If so which school do you think does a great job?
