The county needs to make hard choices about what needs funding. Government can't be the solution to all of society's issues.

The county got a healthy infusion of funds from the federal government for the pandemic. They treated it as a permanent budget increase.

Doesn’t most of the money go to MCPS and MCPD?

This kind of action is never a one-time thing. Once it starts, it never stops. I gather the pensions aren't fully funded already or this simply wouldn't be necessary. I am sure the funds will be put back. Maybe. Eventually.

The County Executive’s recommended budget (pg. 8-4) includes a significant policy change to OPEB funding for FY23 by proposing the use of $20 million in OPEB Trust assets to pay current year retiree health claims for the County Government

If I had any confidence whatsoever that MoCo spent money prudently and that what they call investments would result in growth, I would be all in on a tax increases. I’d don’t get value from what I pay now.

Imagine not being able to figure out they more spending =/= better services, especially when it is all spent on tons of garbage govt bloat, increasing salaries, and is all down with little oversight or accountability. And that's all on top of increasing spending using veeeeeery generous projections for revenue that are probably completely outside of the realm of reality.

It means more deficits/problems with the budget, which we all know means more tax hikes because they can't grow the economy nor are cutting spending. And there is no accountability in place to actually measure improvements in outcomes due to increased spending.

No one in this thread said that Moco was going down the tubes, or that the infrastructure was bad. Thats pure gaslighting to pretend that was said here.

What people did say was point out that the article shows serious structural problems in Elrich's budget that will continue- unless something is done to reign in spending and costs.

The tax lever cant be the only play, every time.

The council is showing no willingness to confront these structural issues- so yes, I would imagine more tax hikes are coming.

We are leaving MoCo as soon as we can. The County has been run by a cabal of takins park communists for decades, and now the bill is due. Unsubscribe.

They could get it under control this year and avoid tax rate increases this year and next. The budget would still grow because property values have increased so much.

Will the council get spending under control? Doubtful. A lot of groups need payback for supporting people in the election and Glass and Friedson need to raise money for executive.
