Absolutely. I work in higher ed on a 10 month contract. I do have my kids in camps some weeks (summer is long!) but just the freedom to not have to figure camps out for every week of the break would be worth it to me.

I would do it! I have a similar schedule where I am an 11 month employee and it's a bit stressful to coordinate my schedule with camps and what not. For me, I am close to retirement and it doesn't pay to switch but if I were younger then I would. I used to do a lot of traveling when I was a 10 month employee (this was before kids).

Yes! even without kids, the option to have summer off is amazing!

I would absolutely do this. It’s a precious and fleeting time, and not having to stick your kids in camp all summer but instead letting them get to enjoy and explore and hang with me? I would totally take that option

I would do it - but trust me the summer will go by fast and it will feel like nothing!

I don't live in the DC area anymore and so my COL is much lower (over 40% lower). I currently earn 69k and if I kept my 11 month contract, I would be earning around 72k next year but if I drop to a 10 month contract, I'd earn 66k. My husband earns 61k so our combined family income is 130k soo using a COL calculator, it would be like earning 194k in northern VA.

With childcare, we will be going from paying on average 10-20k (the worst year) in childcare costs to roughly 5k including extra babysitting needs and a week or two of summer camp but if I don't need before-school care then I'm looking at $1,500 for annual care for both kids (after school care is $50 a month per kid). If I include summer care, the costs go up and could at at the worst 4k extra but more likely 2k....it all depends on availability.

My husband also just got a 5% pay raise.

Would you take a 6k pay cut to switch from an 11 month public school contract to a 10 month contract? It would be a 3k cut from my current earnings. I have 2 kids and my youngest is starting kindergarten.

Currently with my 11 month schedule, I have to work an extra 20 days beyond teachers and my days are scattered through July-early August. This year is better than last but I have 1 full week off then a week later 2 full weeks off and then scattered days until mid-august.

I've been dreaming of having my full summers off with my kids and really enjoying our time together and probably doing more and slower travel- like renting an apartment for a month (Husband probably can't come that whole time). During the school year, I work often work 50+ hour work weeks which includes a lot of evening and weekend hours.
