Or when you send invites, could get options and order ahead of time. Restaurants have accommodated this before.

I’d either tell him to pick a less expensive restaurant or tell his friends not to order $40 fish. Although how likely is it that teenage boys want fish?

I say let them order whatever they want on the menu. Either full pay for this place or make him choose a place that doesen't offer menu items more expensive than want you want to pay.

How old is your son? I could see this working for 16+, maybe. A gift card is a good idea to set parameters on the cost, but you can't expect the guests to pay. And only you know if your son would actually be able to cover any overages.

If it's a budget issue, you're probably better off inviting fewer guests.

My son wants to go out to eat with friends for his bday. The restaurant he picked is fine except there are a few meals on the menu that are expensive. I want to set a max dollar limit per person. I don’t want anyone ordering the $40 fish of the day when there are several options under $25.
