Hope everyone will be attending the meeting on 4/26. I am pro rezone. But…. As a parent that attended PTA meetings - the issue is that some parents are against rezoning. They would rather stay put in an overcrowded school instead of get zoned to a school that is really no different. There’s no chance that the school will get an expansion.

According to a county map I saw a while back, the KGES district has the highest concentration of French speakers of anywhere in the county. I’m sure some moved into the area due to the FI program.

How many children are in French Immersion? If they moved that to an under crowded school, would that solve the problem?

You’re right. They have plenty of options since KG is an overcrowded school surrounded by other schools with space. The issue isn’t parents objecting to being reassigned but FCPS’s failure to address the overcrowding on a timely basis. People have been raising this at School Board meetings and hearings for years.

If you're "surprised" that it's at 121% capacity, you either haven't been at the school long or haven't been paying attention. Each grade has 7 classrooms, with the exception of K with 4 (and they really need 5). This has been an issue for at least 5 years, if not longer.

I really don't get the kid gloves about rezoning. There are a lot of easy areas to rezone, one of which is the block mentioned as closer to Haycock. It's a shame we can't all be in the building.

https://www.fcps.edu/sites/default/files/media/pdf/SY2022-23ElementarySchoolBoundaries.pdf the children zoned for KG that are south of Kirby are on the same block as haycock. it is ridiculous. they could go down and walk on the sidewalk (never leaving the block!) to get to haycock, but instead need to be bussed or dropped off, as they are too far and have to cross 2 major roads.

students north of chain bridge do not need to attend Kent gardens.

there are also students zoned for Franklin Sherman that should attend Churchill.

My kids go to Franklin Sherman, it’s an excellent school, always total 400 or so students. I think some KG kids can be zoned to FS, it will be beneficial for KG. FS is awesome, great culture, no bullying. Just a great for ES kid to be.

No one zoned for Kent Gardens lives on the same block or street as Haycock; no one from Kent Gardens should be rezoned to Churchill Road (they can move some KG kids to Chesterbrook or Franklin Sherman); and you seem to have an inflated view of the significance of a Churchill Road address.

If they want to do something to address some of the weird Churchill Road/Spring Hill boundaries, that would probably make sense, but it’s a separate project.

Received a message this morning about the potential rezoning of KG in the coming years. Any ideas on the proposal? The school is indeed crowded, and I am very surprised that it is already 121% of capacity....
