I agree it is a ridiculous expectation to have kids cut their vacations so short, but it probably helps the mega-schools in that it weeds out a certain percentage of kids who are not willing to do it. We are weeded out! There are plenty of private sports options out there that are better than the high school experience in terms of sports training. You miss all the school spirit, though!

Since the high school is not permitted to have practices prior to a date set by the state, the captains usually hold practices for a couple of weeks prior to the start of tryouts/practices. YMMV, but we found having a swimmer and a soccer player meant no family summer vacation


Same here, except it’s one swimmer and the other in marching band, which starts the first week of August. If we’re lucky and the calendars align perfectly, we might get a partial week at the very end of July.

We’ve switched to winter break and spring break family vacations instead.

Some sports are no cut (like cross country at our HS) so if a kid is in camp, they could conceivably walk on when they come back. Contact the coach.

I think it’s spring. I know some kids who did fall and winter sports and are now in volleyball.

And to the original PP or the volleyball shoot off, after this year your kid will likely be expected to do summer workouts starting in mid July. Plan your vacations for the end of June if you want them in fall sports.

Aug 9th is the day the state allows fall sports to begin practices. You should check with your school's athletic director for their specific schedules.

At BCC the girls varsity coach had open summer sessions for anyone who wanted to come. You had to pay though!
