And yes I know it is such a bad/weird time for a potluck, but I wasn’t on the party planning committee

For late afternoon, I would not bring munchkins. Buy some small cookies or brownie bites if you want something bite sized.

What's the difference? I'm no more or less inclined to eat brownies than munchkins, and the time of day is pretty irrelevant.

Sure - I like munchkins. 50? If you're not the only one bringing a dessert?

Sometimes I bring drinks if I can cook - not sure if they need drinks.

Baked goods are the way go.

a cake
cookies
muffins
pastries
Baklava from a Middle Eastern grocery
specialty breads (Panera usually has some interesting optiond, but these days even grocery stores have some good options aa well)

Basically, go to any bakery and see what looks good.

Who wants to eat in the late afternoon? Is this an appetizer kind of thing?

I don't understand. If it's late afternoon, what is this? Pot luck happy hour?

Any tried and true potluck recipes or things to buy at the store?

Preferably shelf-stable since it's a late afternoon work potluck. I could also go out right before the potluck and pick up like, a deli platter at the local grocery store.
