Because its q for profit system. Capitalism doesn't care about people, only growth and profits. Regulating it some is the only way to actually care about society. But the govt systems here are so big they are inefficient and lots of waste as well.

Not OP but Medicare doesn’t pay for assisting living/nursing home/private duty caregivers.


Am aware. But OP also seems quite concerned about healthcare expenses.

Once your health starts to get bad--even the slightest, move near your adult child(ren.) Things can go downhill very fast, and you can't expect your adult children (especially if there are young grandchildren in the picture!) to be constantly jetting back and forth to Europe to take care of you.

I know… my social life is bifurcated anyway. Kids in the US, more friends in Europe. We’ll see when the time comes. As long as health is ok, going back and forth is best. It’s more about toward the end - I wouldn’t want to bankrupt myself with a nursing home, god forbid.

Has a lot to do with relationship with your children, how far away these grandkids are from being born, your health, your ability to create a new social life outside of your kids in a new place, your funds…really hard for someone else to say.

Tempted to retire in Europe, where I have many friends, familiar with the culture and am fluent in the language. A recent experience with an ER visit that cost us €70 cemented this desire. However, DCs and future grandchildren would be in the US. What would you do?
