Can you please give some examples? Thanks.

Academic Decathlon has a national competition, for example.

There are lots of extracurriculars that have national awards? I don’t get what’s not to get.

On CommonApp Honors category, you are supposed to list your awards and the levels- regional, state, national or international. A simple Google can verify. You cannot lie.

I have two kids at an ivy and neither have any national awards.
We are Asian. One had legacy but one did not.
National awards are great but not essential

In theory, anything that you are awarded for which eligibility is open to the nation is a "national award" --that would include competitive scholarships, travel opportunities for which you need to apply, competitive internships, etc...

It feels like the number of mentions of "national awards" is disproportionate to the number of actual legit national awards.

And how can kids have "multiple national awards".
Their kids all have Regenerton, National Merit and what else?

I'm so confused by this.

So all posters on here writing "multiple national awards" are taking about their kids being Regeneron finalists?

^^^ When I said "legit" I should have said "meaningful." Of course a PVSA is legit -- it's just not meaningful when it comes to college admissions.

But every last kid on here has "multiple national level awards".

How is every kid on here distinguished at a national level? Are they all literally in the top 100 science kids in the US?

I think Regeneron is the big one.

Depends. The big talent search competition is only for seniors and the awards are given well after college apps are complete.

And yes....many of the winners choose very top colleges to attend. But they likely had gained admittance without that award if it was ED or EA.
