This is why many of them do it in high school. They go public until 9th or 10th grade, then they reclass and redo that year at a private. Then they get more looks from certain colleges (who have those privates on their list) and they save money by not sending them private from k-9/10

We did it, but not at the same school. We were at a smaller independent school and their pandemic response was dismal (much, much worse than at our other kids' schools), so we had DC repeat 9th at a different school. That being said, the school we left was willing to work with us and would have allowed DC to reclass, but we decided to move on.

I haven’t heard of the redshirting happening while in high school, at least in the DC private schools, no. In K/early elem, sure, or in public schools, but it’s new to me that athletes are redshirting while in private high schools. But I don’t have an athletic kid and only a 9th grader, so I guess I’ve learned something!

Lol, move? No, parents brag about it. They’re happy to point out that their kid has moved to a private, that they’ve reclassed, and that they are being scouted by colleges for their sport. There’s no shame there. They don’t have to run away.

Many, many, MANY Catholic prep schools in New England allow this.

OP, can you give a little more information about why you are consider this at such a late stage? It might help us suggest schools that might be amenable, if that’s what you’re looking for.

I can’t think of a situation where a mainstream student in private school in this area would reclass for anything except failing, and most of the private school require a certain minimum GPA, so in that situation, the student would be asked not to return.

Even if there is a non-academic reason to reclass in high school and the school would allow it (doubtful), as a PP noted, there is going to be a social stigma involved in repeating a grade. Most of the private schools are comparatively small, and everyone will know the student has been held back.

Some may allow it, but if you are starting new, why not just reclass when you get there?

I don’t think a kid would want to repeat a high school grade, even if the school would allow it, and I doubt many would other than some of the niche schools that cater to kids with learning differences and such, and even that’s a big maybe. There’s a lot of stigma attached to repeating a grade once kids are out of the very early elementary years. If repeating was necessary, I’d change schools.
