Not true. Try calling their doc or hospital for any info.

I'm a physician with 3 kids in the 21-25 age bracket and despite their being on my insurance, I appropriately have NO access to their health records and all I can see is location of services and date. So while one could glean a bit of knowledge from billing statements, they must consent for you to see any true health records.

That way the parents keep control over the young adult. My parents tried this 20 years ago and I wasn't having it. It's tougher for young adults today to break free, partially because they've been constantly tethered to their parents by phone and partially because it's hard to make enough to go out on your own, especially if the young adult isn't willing to be uncomfortable and have multiple roommates or live in a not so great area.

Middle class kids grow up slow, it’s been that way for a long time. Poor and rich kids grow up fast.

20 years ago, college kids weren’t on their parents health insurance.

Life is more expensive and competitive nowadays, and mistakes are more costly.

Maybe we travel in different circles, because I don't see that. I was just talking with someone earlier this week about her 25 yr old son who three years ago had a tumor on his brain and he handled it himself. Of course his parents offered their support but he picked his surgeons, where he wanted to recover, how much he wanted to tell work, finding a follow up neurologist, being in charge of his therapies afterwards, etc.

My 23 yr old cousin just moved near us and reached out to get together. My 18 yr old cousin is moving to FL for college next fall and wanted to fly there by herself, and her parents had to insist they'd come with her to get set up.

It really is funny. I somewhat blame phones. Young adults are in constant contact with their parents. It's hard to launch. Pre cell phones, I didn't talk to my parents every when I was 21. There was NO WAY they knew as much about my life.

When they’re on their own dime, they can do whatever they want. Truly.

What's up with society's obsession with infantilizing young adults. Shouldn't 21+ people be making their own decisions? I see parents deciding or pressurizing about grad plans, professions, living situation, dating age, marriage age etc etc. When did our country became India or Saudi Arabia?
