There's no land for a 4th high school unless it's urban (no fields, busses, etc), which maybe it will be. Arlington is going to become more dense and urban. That's good for property values, culture and restaurants. It's not good for schools - can you think of any major city with good schools? APS has already been going downhill though but this will accelerate that. I think kids in school now will be fine as this transformation will probably take 20 years or so.

We pulled my kids out of APS after elementary. The schools are overcrowded currently; all high schools are over 100% capacity. Now with MMH (or what ever the new name is since missing middle was a total misnomer) I can’t wait to move out of Arlington. Just a few more years and I’m out.

If you add even more kids without fixing the underlying overcrowding problems, where does that leave us?

(What is the solution to the high school overcrowding problem if you think it's fine to add more kids? School board has been clear that there's no land to build another comprehensive high school. School board has previously floated having virtual classes and having a two-schedule system where some kids come into school in the mornings and others come in in the afternoons. Does anyone actually WANT that? It's such a rich county and we're threatening our educational system with this ridiculousness wut?)

Missing middle isn't adding kids over night. So let's all take a deep breath.

Do you get this upset when new condo buildings are being built? Because those add MUCH more density, much faster than anything missing middle will add.

Last, absolutely bring your concerns to the county board, and ask them to work with APS to alleviate high school crowding. Complaining here does nothing.

Where can we see a map of what zone our house is in?

Arlington has no space to build a 4th HS and no money to do additions. Plus the planning process here takes decades. Not going to happen in the 8 years before your kid gets there.

So which district would you move into? I will find you an FCPS parent whose unhappy and will tell you about it.

Exactly. I thought all the people fleeing for private was freeing up SO many seats. Huh.

The county has been very clear that children do not live in anything but single family homes. All the units built (58 lots times as much as 6plex or a little as duplex) will only have adults living there. Just like affordable housing only has adults and no children. I truly wish the county would work on our infrastructure (focusing on schools especially high schools) before adding density. I am anti MM but understand that Arlington will and should become more dense, but the county should provide for current residents before adding so many more

The impact will be in south Arlington where schools are already crowded. People will wring their hands in concern but won’t really GAF because it’s not their schools. Wash, rinse, repeat.

We have a 1st grader in APS , and we’re watching high school enrollments and how large our zoned HS WL is planned to get (near 3000?) with that addition.

Now with Missing Middle, is it likely school population will grow even FURTHER? Does it bring in more money at least, to maybe add a similar addition to Yorktown and relieve the system somewhat? Or maybe a 4th high school?
