Posting a work out is lame.

Posting a PR is awesome. Its inspirational. And helps build a community

It is pretty dumb. I use Strava only so I can glue Zwift together with garmin connect. So all my stuff is out there for my friends. It’s kinda nice to see what they are up to. Still think it’s weird and it’s not fully public.

Absolutely obnoxious. They need to ban all filming in the gym. These idiots take up so much space. It's also hilarious how many dumb women post videos thinking they performed some kind of 'gotcha' where they try to 'expose' men who they claim are 'creepers' because they are 'checking them out' while working out. Like no, sorry Lisa, you're in a public space looking and acting like a moron at the gym and hogging up tons of space in front of the power racks or weight racks. Maybe people are looking at you because you're stupid and want to know when the hell you're gonna get out of the way of the weights so other people can use them. It's so funny when these videos backfire on women trying to 'expose' guys and they get ripped apart on social media. Just workout and get out of the way. No one cares they you're exercising. Ban video taping in gyms now.

OP is jealous that she can't run 13 miles. That's a pretty long run, and I feel like it's totally fine to post that accomplishment. Heck, even 2 is an accomplishment for someone just starting out. Some people thrive on the positive feedback they get.

Having a strong negative reaction to someone else’s post is problematic. You may want to step away from social media.

I know a LOT of people who post workout summaries on Instagram, usually to stories. Peloton classes + milestones, OTF classes + splat points, runtracker apps with a summary of pace and distance. I don't do it, but I don't hate it either. I'm either vaguely proud of them for sticking to it, or reminded that I need to get off my @ss and get a ride in.

Filming yourself in the gym is worse, to me, because I can't help but think of how disruptive it is to everyone else at the gym to have this person taking up the squat rack + the floorspace between the squat rack and their phone (can't walk in the shot!) + the buffer zone I'd give them so that I'm not accidentally in the shot and posted online. Feels aggressively self-absorbed in a way that "so glad I got up for the 5:30 today! Start your day right!!" posts do not.

I agree that you shouldn't publicly post pictures/videos with other people in them. That being said I sometimes use my account for self-accountability: I say to myself I'm going to train regularly and the force myself to post pics or videos doing the training so I feel like there's social pressure not to skip because I'm feeling lazy or whatever. That being said, my insta has like 30 followers, all people I know through the same athletic hobby so I'm clearly not any kind of baby influencer lol.

It should be illegal to post pictures or videos that includes innocent gym goers or bystanders

I do not want my fat a$$ on Instagram unintentionally

Why does it bother you so much? Just keep scrolling if you don’t like it, just as you would for anything else.

I’m not the OP and I don’t have my panties in a twist about it, but posting selfies and pictures of kids publicly is clearly also bad. To friends/family is okay although I don’t do that either.

What is acceptable to post?

I understand that this is a trend amongst people who want to be insta famous for their body/workouts. If you're at the gym and taking videos of you exercising so you can watch later and correct your form, that's understandable. But if you post that video to social media, or post a picture of today's run/pace/distance, YOU'RE A TOOL. No one cares that you ran 13 miles today. No one cares that you are doing squats at the gym. You're an even bigger tool if you post these videos and other people are in them. If you want to post your marathon picture or pace, that's also understandable.

Are these people super insecure, want to show off, or both?
