I have the same question, though not for sports/competitions. Wondering what the rule is for after school activities like drama/play rehearsals.

This is one of those things where MCPS admins and educators will say one thing officially and do another thing informally which causes tension and fights between parents and their kids.
Just say seniors don't have to come but if they want to come, they're welcome and they'll be in a study hall and whatever other activities they have in place for them. What's so hard about that?
There is no instruction, PP. Why would you force your kid to go? He can sleep in, and do some homework at home, like my senior.
And it's not just seniors. Wellness activities are merely babysitting - they're not meaningful or relevant. A LOT of kids are not going. They can work, or play if they have the time.
This isn't the same as skipping a real school day. My senior would never do that.

Currently in a power struggle with my senior DS who is insisting he doesn't have to go to school even though the principal and school information all say otherwise.
This is one of those things where MCPS admins and educators will say one thing officially and do another thing informally which causes tension and fights between parents and their kids.
Just say seniors don't have to come but if they want to come, they're welcome and they'll be in a study hall and whatever other activities they have in place for them. What's so hard about that?

My kid's seventh period teacher said she will not be taking attendance.
I am not sure why any other teachers would take attendance if there is not any actual instruction.

I believe so, at least for Walter Johnson, but my senior who was not planning on attending did not. He was accosted by a staff member who told him to report at noon to the cafeteria tomorrow, where presumably they stick students who didn't sign up (and maybe sort them into available activities? No idea). He came home all confused, because WJ really did make it seem as if those wellness time wasters were necessary, but then he realized that most seniors weren't coming in and that he'd rather sleep, eat me out of house and home, and do some work.

High schools take attendance but there will be no instruction, just "wellness" activities they needed to sign up for. My burned-out senior will sleep in and catch up on AP homework at home.

I found the email. They have periods 6 and 7 but they're doing "wellness activities". It looks like they do take attendance though.

I think it's optional. It's only two afternoon periods of wellness. My Senior DD only goes to school in the morning; internship in the afternoon, so she will not be going in tomorrow..
