He really need a diagnosis, OP, before you consider McLean. There are a myriad of learning problems that you need to rule out. Talk to your pediatrician about getting a full neuropsych workup. It's expensive but it will tell you what you need to know. THEN consider switching schools.

For math, maybe try Mathnasium, Kumon, or such like. It costs money, of course, but I think they will give a test to find what s/he knows and doesn’t know, then focus on filling the gaps or soft spots.
USA schools generally are awful at teaching math, even if the math texts are decent (often the texts also are awful), which is why so many parents supplement on math after school.

The pandemic has been over two years. That’s not the issue. Op have him tested and look into tutors. Talk to the school.

The pandemic left A LOT of kids with holes in their learning, so I agree that a tutor along with a diagnostic test could be could in identifying weaknesses and addressing them in a one on one setting.
As a prior poster pointed out, it could just be that math and science don't come easy to him and he'll need to work harder in those subjects to get the results he wants. I wouldn't jump to the $50,000 solution just yet unless you already are considering private school.

I think McLean school would be fine but he would be in a student population that skews heavily to students with a variety of learning differences and disabilities. It doesn’t sound like he really needs that, just that math and science are not his strong suit. I agree with pp, maybe try a tutor first. I’m assuming dyscalculia was ruled out along with dyslexia.

Hi,
My son is in 8th grade and is having problems keeping up in math and science. We had him tested and he doesn't have dyslexia, ADHD or anything else they could pinpoint. Basically, he finds math and science more difficult and needs a lot of extra time and help.
Would the McLean school be a good fit or is tailored for kids with specific needs?
