My advice: you can do nothing. He has to want to do it. Your nagging/mentioning gently/hinting - all will not help.

Fat-dog owner here. I definitely don’t think she should be cutting her husband’s diet by 10%. It’s his body, his choice. If he wants help, he’ll ask for it.

But regarding diets, people do like to make it more complicated than it is. And you don’t necessarily have to go super restrictive.

Everybody is different. For me lifting never made me all that hungrier. Running, not really hungrier. Swimming - hungry very easy - maybe it’s the water temperature. Biking - hungry after 1 hour.

Easy changes to make would be water only. He should be drinking more anyways. It’s definitely 90% diet.

Exercise stimulates hunger. It’s incredibly hard to fight your hormones on this. Read about calorie compensation.

Slimming down is 90% diet, OP. Having said that, he's probably healthier exercising, even if he's gaining a little. I'm the opposite. I hate exercise, but I don't eat too much. Basically I'm skinny fat. I don't think it's good for my health!

After he has an established work out routine he can worry about cutting calories later next year. One reason people quit new healthy habits is because they try to do too much at one time and can’t maintain that

He will need to fuel to work out.

You 2 should take a walk every day he’s not working out to promote his new healthier lifestyle.

You need to be more supportive and less judgmental.

He’s working out and has done that for 6 weeks congrats focus on that.

Thank you, I am not judgmental and very supportive! I am just worried that he will gain more weight instead of loosing what he needs to loose. So, panicking a little. I will keep encouraging him.

This is OP - thank you all for your replies.

1) I don't think he has gained much muscle yet, his cloths don't fit any better.
2) You have a good point about changing diet. He seems to be hungry after workouts and eat more than before. Probably more calories than burned exercising. I will look into making diet changes for all of us.

Does he want advice? He sounds stubborn. He may need to come to the realization on his own that he’s eating too much.

Here’s what our vet told me when my dog was too fat. Weigh her current food portion. Then decrease it by 10%. If she doesn’t lose weight, decrease it by 10% again. She lost weight easily when we went from 2 cups a day to just under 2 cups a day. At one point she was even underweight and we had to go up a bit. It was really eye opening to see that it doesn’t take a huge calorie deficit or surplus to lose or gain…but it does take some math. My dog did not need a trainer. Previously, though, I did joke she had a slow metabolism and thought she was just going to be fat. Nope. She just needed to eat a little bit less.

I apply that lesson when I need to lose weight. Small but consistent calorie deficits over time do add up.

I don’t think he should track calories and lose weight. You should encourage him to continue to get strong and healthy.

He may be gaining muscle and that is why his weight is higher, but there should be something like clothes fitting better or losing inches of that is happening. It could be that the workouts make him hungry and he is over eating. Have lower calorie healthy snacks and drink water before meals. An activity tracker that shows calories burned during workouts may help too. I was surprised how low my calorie burn was and that helped me to adjust what I was eating. The trainer should be helping him with this.

I've always been active, but it wasn't until I made significant eating changes, that I lost weight. Many people think that because they exercise they've earned the right to eat more.

In the event he thinks it's all muscle, have him get an Inbody scan. It set me straight.

The biggest effect will be diet. Start with something easy like cutting out all sugary drinks or sweets.

My husband needs to loose weight. He started working out 4 days a week with personal trainer about 6 weeks ago. So far he gained +10 pounds. I noticed he’s been eating more. He refuses to track calories and starting to get discouraged. Any advice/opinion is appreciated.
