May I ask which Math class? My son has to repeat algebra 1, and Math is not his strong suit at all. I'm worried about an online class moving quickly and him not asking questions as he should and getting too far behind...

Last year, they offered optional weekly in-person help sessions to support the online classes, centralized at a few high schools. Assuming they do the same this year, you could insist he attend those every week. That would give him the opportunity to ask questions and ensure he understands the material each week.

Health and core classes like science, which may be different

Attendance is mandatory unless you have a reason excused in regular Aug-June school like illness or a death in the family. DD #2 had Lyme during one course and missed a single class. It was like missing a whole week.

The classes are greatly accelerated so they cover a semester in a few weeks. My kids took courses to jump ahead in math and get health & tech out of the way to take more electives. They found them both hard and a lot of work. One DD got her first ever B in summer school two years ago.

No final exam. Lots of small worksheets, short-response essays (a paragraph or two), a little research project to find resources online and put together a short presentation. Stuff like that. Nothing individually difficult, but a LOT of small assignments, typically 3-5 to do in between each online session.

My daughter took health last summer. She didn't find the work overwhelming. Attendance was mandatory but the teacher she had didn't require cameras to be on.

Why did your child take Precalculus over the summer?

Maybe PP’s child was in Algebra 1 in 9th?

Was your child retaking Honors Precalculus over the summer or for the first time?

Rather than debate why people take classes could we share experiences about the classes?

Any experience with science? What do they do about labs? What are the assessments like? Are the webinars interactive? Are cameras on?

My kids took health. The work was not hard, but it was voluminous and time consuming. The synchronous meetings are mandatory, but we were able to work with the teacher when my kid had a conflict for one session.

Online summer school is a means to an end. Not great.
