If you really want to move, I think earlier would be better than later. When they are in early elementary , starting school every year is like a whole new world. By later elementary, friend groups and routines are less fluid.

That said, we had a couple years in late elementary where the chance to have a totally fresh start would have been priceless.

is she in a special program at her school? is the school particularly good for her profile? what would the new school be like? has she made friends? i have a similar kid - and though i want to move am holding off until after 5th so that he can finish elementary where he is comfortable

Move when it’s best for you—when you find the house. You’re overthinking this, even for a kid with autism.

My answer is the best time to move is when it is best for you, the parent. You will scaffold the change for her, and kids are resilient. She can find happiness elsewhere, if you are ready to move.

DD is 6 and in kindergarten. She is doing fantastic at school. But we live in a small apartment and can’t afford anything larger in Arlington County, where we live. We could afford a larger home if we move further out, and that would work fine for my commute. I’m REALLY hesitant to move DD though. She has autism, anxiety, and ADHD. Change is extremely hard for her. If we decide to move, when would it be easiest on DD?
