My kid didn’t apply but I went down the rabbit hole a few years ago. Interesting international programs, they have a joint program where you do the first two years in Switzerland. They own a castle somewhere in Europe were they have an Emerson only program. And it is right on Boston Common. They do give significant merit for strong students.

Jay Leno is a graduate and they were the first place to offer a BA in comedic arts.

It would have been my dream school had I known about it 40 years ago.

Also, they did pretty well at the Oscars this year. Love the Daniels.

Over $70k tuition/room/board??!!

Ahhh, good point!

My kid is a sophomore creative writing major at Emerson. Absolutely loves the school and the city. Classes are small, professors are accessible, there are tons of opportunities for involvement, and they don’t call the alumni network “the Emerson Mafia” for nothing.

The Honors Program adds some extra rigor, if that’s of interest to your student. And the associated scholarship doesn’t hurt.

Great for a theatre kid but highly competitive for admission into either the Musical Theatre BFA or Theatre and Performance BFA. Both are audition programs and require a screening video before even invited to audition. After audition chances are as described above, they admit about 65 from 1000+ auditions to get 18. And also as stated, $$$$$. If your student doesn't want the BFA I am not sure if they offer a BA in Theatre and if they do, it may be hard to get classes that are meant for BFA. If your kid is a serious theatre kid, they probably know a lot about this process. It's a crazy process to get into a theatre BFA anywhere really...very competitive and arduous process.

A lot of people I know that I can't stand went there.

The kids I know that have gone there were for communications and the performing arts. They love/loved it.

Good friend's DD is there. Many years in theatre. Decided they didn't want to pursue in college, but basically be adjacent to it. Loves it and this kid is not easy to please.

Location is incredible. My DD spent a few weeks there for a debate camp that rented space from the college over the summer and being right in the heart of Boston like that was a tremendous experience. And as of others have said I think they are quite strong in theater and media. I will say, though, a professor from their communication department who lives in my town recently wrote a letter to the town government that was absurdly poorly written. He made a big fuss about indicating that he is a “communications expert” but what he sent just so poorly constructed. I thought it was somebody who might not have a college education on first read, so I was pretty shocked to find out he was actually a professor of communication! Made me wonder a little bit about that particular academic department.

For its niche (theater, film, communications), it is outstanding. It has a great alumni network--which can be crucial for success in the arts. My nephew is a film major at Emerson and is thrilled with the opportunities he has had. I have a good friend that is a alumni who has had a very successful career in political communication and who is now a college professor.
