Some of it depends on the school and year. Not all extended day programs are the exact same. We transferred from one school to another and my children’s experiences were drastically different.

Extended day is miserable in middle school, it’s only for kids who can’t be trusted on their own. Most kids just walk to nearby parks or what not.

Not only is there a drop off of 5th, but I’ve seen as kids get older and have practices etc you’ll see the “extended day” in name only students. They are in extended day for like 20 minutes, just to make coordination for carpool or sports pickup easier.

You should check with your child's friends' parents. For my son, he had lots of friends in fourth grade, but then ended up being literally the only fifth grader. We were in the process of moving, so we kept him in extended day until we moved closer to the school (so he could walk home independently) but it was really tough for him. He was playing with younger kids and kept getting in trouble for playing too rough.

Our school gets out at 2:40. There are still lots of older kids in extended day. Not quite as many as the younger ages, but plenty. My oldest will be in 4th next year and she will still go bc I also will have a 1st grader. They love it bc lots of their friends are there and the staff at our school is pretty great. If my 4th grader was my only or youngest, I do think she could handle coming home. But honestly I like her to have the play time.

I looked at the signouts today, there’s definitely a drop off after 3rd at our school. Looked like 7-8 for each vs more like 15-20 for the younger grades. My second grader is already campaigning to come home on the bus with a key next year, but I think he’s going to do another year.

all 4th and 5th graders will continue unless a family's needs change. It even happens in middle school but changes shape.

It's a horrible system BTW and I hate it (payment, the bullshoot registration email that encourages you to do it but then it's not open yet). It won't allow you to prepay or use amex.

When the registration opens you submit your registration online at the link in the email. It really is all there.

An email today seems to have gone out about registration for already existing Extended Day families for next year. It didn't explain how registration works. Is this something that is done online or in person. The email I received didn't have detailed info around how to actually register when the time comes. I tried calling but was referred to the email and was told "all the information is in there". I guess I need more coffee. What was the process like last year for families already in the program? Thanks!
