Why didn't YOU answer the question?

It’s impressive when people are willing to admit their own ignorance.

To elaborate on 22:07, there was some sort of law where the Jewish people could save someone (like get a pardon) and Pilate was trying to offer that so he could have a way out and spare him. The people in the crowd picked Barabbas (some bad dude) instead. I recall Pilate was surprised at this.

OP, if you go read the story rather than rely on DCUM (including me, who is going off memory) it should answer your question

I watched a really interesting piece about the historical politics. Basically Pilate had been given a crap assignment and he knew it. There had been a number of rebellions among the Jews, at least one of which revolved around a purported prophet and at least one of which had resulted in a very violent reprisal by the Romans. The area was a tinderbox. And neither the Romans nor the Jewish authorities (who were, remember, a subjugated government in forced collaboration with an occupying force) wanted more unrest that might lead to even more violent repression by the Romans. But also neither wanted to be blamed for the death of a moderately popular preacher. So the Jewish authorities handed him over to the Romans and pilate washed his hands of it and both sides got rid of a problem without having to take the blame for it. That’s why Pilate washed him hands of the business—not because he was some conflicted spirit who had pangs of conscience . He wanted to be able to blame the Jews to avoid another bloody rebellion on his own watch.

In scriptures, he never claims he’s a political liberator, but the Romans didn’t worry about details like that. If some Jews saw him that way, he was a threat to the political order.

Were, not we’re. Blasted autocorrect.

there was tension between teh Jewish people and teh Romans b/c the Romans wanted them to swear allegiance/do temple worship to the emperor and the Jews were vehemently opposed to performing any sort of idol worship. The romans knew that there were whispers of someone called a Messiah who wa suppose dot foment rebellion, the Sanhedrin accused Jesus of claiming to be teh Messiah, he didn't refute the charge and then the Sanhedrin turned him over as a rebel/fomentor of rebellion to the Romans and the Romans crucified him. The Jewish establishment was very weary of these movements- remember John the Baptist was an essene and was killed by the roman "king" of Judea , Jesus was a known associate of John the Baptist so they had their doubts about these wandering preacher types. The temple was still fully operational so there didn't seem to be any reason for traveling preachers etc..

As I recall from Catechism, because he said he was King of the Jews.

Agree,
He was accused of saying he was king of the Jews.
He didn’t refute the claim during cross examination .
