That doesn't stop you from driving.

I don't think being in prison for a lengthy sentence is the right answer because of the lack of intent, but after any DUI you need to have an interlock device on all of your cars forever.

I support these levels of sentences. They did not mean to kill anyone. There is not a need to lock them up for decades like murderers.

No freaking way. You don't get to say, "whoops, it was an accident. Sorry, your child is dead". If you were negligent and reckless in your actions, the punishment should be more severe.
I cannot imagine what I would do if someone did this to my kids and then claimed it was an accident. You don't get to bring back your loved ones. Death is permanent. I'd lose my mind

Getting in the car drunk is just like shooting a random bullet into a crowd. We can infer that you have intent to possibly kill someone (or at least that you don’t truly care if you do). If we were jailing people for veering off the road while having a sudden heart attack, I could see your point about not locking people away who don’t have an intent to kill. But this woman chose to drink alcohol, knowing she had access to her car keys and without any apparent alternative mode of transportation arranged. She took a life away because of her purposeful actions. 3.5 years is a joke.

I can feel this family’s pain just reading their quotes in the article. They loved their daughter so much. It’s appalling that the driver drunkenly drove the wrong way and killed this poor girl in the prime of her life and only gets a 3.5 year sentence. That is crazy to me. We give longer sentences for drug crimes. The article mentions that the driver has a young child, but why should that factor in? Just because you have a child doesn’t mean you should get a slap on the wrist for killing someone else’s child.

It shocks me how leniently we treat DUIs in this country. People with 2, 3 + DUIs are still allowed out in the world to continue putting other people at risk.
