I met him in London in the 90s at an audition (I was auditioning) for the stage version of Fiddler on the Roof. He was charming. I didn't get the part and the show closed early. So that was that.

So sad. Fiddler on the Roof is one of my all-time favorite movies. Sallah Shabati is a fabulous movie too, about the cultural disconnect between Sephardic and Ashkenazi Jews in Israel.

I saw him perform Fiddler live in the early 80’s. I had already had seen it once live, but Topal’s portrayal was amazing.
