ADHD + Dysgraphia + Dyscalculia here. McLean has been transformational for us. We moved there in middle school after a mix of public & private elementary. Now our 4th year and my son is happy, engaged and striving in school - not just surviving. It is not as big socially as public school, but it is enough to make friends. Also, in the smaller environment he's found lots of opportunity in the sports. Thats been a big positive for him.

If I may ask, whats working/not working where they are currently? Are you in public or different private?

Learning support in public school is lacking. No writing intervention thus far, only accommodations but this far not helpful.

While Lowell is neurodivergent welcoming, it is progressive but not special needs. Support services are resourced at a whole different level at McLean. They are an apples and oranges comparison.

NP - the social part is challenging because it is a very small school. There isn’t a large group of kids in each grade so if your kid doesn’t fit in socially with the group, it will be tough.

My child is finishing first year at McLean Lower school. ADHD and the dyslexia trio. It's been a whole new world. The environment and staff are incredible. We will definitely stay thru at least Middle school. Good luck!

Would you be willing to elaborate on the social challenges your kid faced?

The social part can be challenging. We are leaving because of that.

I echo that. We started in the Lower School and now in the Middle - ADHD and dyslexia. It's the right amount of support. We have friends at Lowell who ended up applying to McLean. My sense is that they try to offer accommodations and support, but it can tend to be more stigmatizing for a kid. At McLean, I think it's just part of the program, all the teachers get it, and kids don't feel out of place if they get support.
