Ridiculous that this kid didn't do the hours in the first place. My DS had over 130 hours all completed prior to starting 9th grade. Its not that hard.

I hope he doesn’t since he hasn’t met the requirements. I mean do you wish otherwise OP?

I think this is a problem for certain groups (special needs, international students and other transplants) who come into the system late in high school and have trouble getting all their hours because of language barriers or other issues.

Please remember that not all families have the competencies and opportunities that you have. It's ugly to jump on people and judge.

Your kid can do it. My kid is in the same situation. I signed him up at Habitat for Humanity and he's working those hours this last semester of a senior year.

Correct, your child really won’t graduate.

Which is ridiculous that they will pass failing kids and move them through to get their diploma, but a straight a student that doesn’t meet the full SSL hours doesn’t get a diploma.

The good news is that it’s only 20 hours and maybe they can do a few long weekends or spring break on earning SSL.

And 20 hours could easily be done on a long weekend or spring break that is coming up.

If he doesn't have the hours, he will not graduate. However, your school should be pulling him to do something to help out and earn those hours. Contact your grade level administrator or counselor. They will have ideas.

He can do his hours during spring break.

The school will reach out to you and they will go into the office and stuff envelopes or something like that. MCPS is not going to let anyone not graduate. Even if they are failing the put them in high school plus to make up the credit in a few weeks.

The entire thing is a joke

Why are you trying to see if he can get away with not meeting the requirement? He has plenty of time to do this and you should be focused on that, not trying to see if your son can get away with not doing what has always been a clear requirement and responsibility for students.

You may want to call your school's SSL coordinator.

Does your school have a book sale? Have seen lots of hours every weekend offered at ours.
