Ours is virtually unlimited plus an allowance for what insurance doesn't cover (testing and storage). Paid basically nothing OOP.

I changed private employers several times over our 6 year, two child journey. Congrats that’s pretty good. Dont use the coverage for drugs / much cheaper OOP. But you should get a couple cycles out of that.

The negotiated rates the your insurance pays the clinic is significantly lower than the advertised rates. Plus, not everything counts toward that lifetime limit. We had one (successful) round and the dent in the lifetime max was only around $2k. It’s the other way around with meds. The insurance pharmacies charge way more than out of pockets costs. But, if it comes down to it for you, there is a hefty black market for these meds in the DC area, largely bc of mandated IVF coverage in Maryland. You can also purchase through international pharmacies. The thing that could really blow up costs for you is that some things are often not covered by insurance. The chromosomal and genetic testing fees are often not covered. So for SGF, that is around $4k a cycle. We just covered some with the FSA and put the rest on an introductory no interest credit card, which is a decision that was good for us, but may not be ideal for others.

Each round of IVF with genetic testing of the embryos is 20K so it won't go far. A friend (with two kids) got 40+ follicles and 0 blasts on the first round. Whoosh. 20K down the drain. Sucks.

If the policy is “self funded” by your company then they can make up whatever rules they want about the policy (don’t have to follow state laws for example). So just be cautious, if it looks too good to be true it probably is.

Certainly benefits employers to pay for IVF. They get to push you to postpone having children for as long as possible to avoid paying for maternity leave.

My company offers a $40k treatment and $20k medicine benefit. I know many people need multiple cycles but it almost seems too good to be true; granted, we are in the very early research stage. Has anyone leveraged such a benefit and how much did you end up paying out of pocket?
