My child doesn’t need a recommendation from the shift manager at McDonald’s, so I’m all good. This would be the only time they’d work such a job anyway.

Thus far my kids have worked summer camps. They are also involved in fall sports and they do not get their full schedules until after tryout week. Therefore having an employer that wants your schedule ahead of time is near impossible for the month of August. One of my kids also worked front desk/snack bar of our pool and the pool was fine with him giving a week to week schedule for the month of August. I'd have your kid be up front with an employer and just tell them that the month of August is hard to predict due to summer marching band erratic schedule and have them ask if it would be ok to submit schedule week to week in August.

I'm not the OP but band at our school has a very intense schedule that is different every day and varies week to week as well. There are weeks where it is 3.5 hours a break and then back for another 3 hours. There is no way to predict the schedule ahead of time.

My 9th grader worked in the snack bar at a pool last summer. It was busy until end of July, then Aug she was facing a cut in hours anyway. So it was no problem to have practice every afternoon then. She kept working evenings and the weekends.

Whether he wants to or not, camp might be the best option. Sometimes one choice (band) means that you don't get to do everything else you want too.
