Survey is counted towards parent engagement. I filled it because someone in MCPS told me to do so as someone in central office takes it into account and it goes in the permanent record of the kid

My kids were in magnet track in MCPS, one kid was off the charts high performer. NT kid though but he got DH's math brain.

There is a link on the letter with more information about GT identification, it's also available on the AEI website https://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/curriculum/enriched/

Click on the link in the announcement about GT identification and there are the exact tests and surveys used to make the decision and answers to many other questions.

Not sure that it matters a lot in instruction, like a PP said, teachers don't have much time to do enrichment, but they did tell us exactly what they are using.

It is used, it is one of the behavioral checklists for GT. If your kid passed all 4 academic criteria ( 2 benchmark assessments, map, dibels), you don’t need to worry about the behavior survey. If your kid passes only 3 academic tests there is a chance for GT through the behavioral checklists (one by parent and one by teacher).

Can someone tell me more because I have a first grader. He has quite high score on math like 220, dibel 510, and I know he has no problem in benchmark assessments. However, he has IEP for behavior problems and we get some calls from teacher every single year. What does that mean? Is GT based on lottery or is it based on score only or score & behavior now? What can kid get out of 2nd grade gifted and talented survey? School is boring for him, and I would really want him to be considered for GT in the coming future.

The GT designation that you get in 2nd grade does not have any impact on whether you are selected for the GT program for 4th/5th grade. That happens at the end of 3rd grade, and that's based on MAP-R scores and grades. MAP-M is not considered.

'
This. Notionally it is supposed to qualify you for in-classroom enrichment in grade 3. Show me a 3rd grade teacher who has time to "enrich" their quick learners on a regular basis and I'll eat my hat. Our ES is terrific, and the teachers still don't have the time or bandwidth to run a separate group, even on a weekly basis. Don't hold your breath on this one, or believe the "your child regularly receives enriched instruction" box on the report card. Just concentrate on cultivating learning in the way that is best for your child and your family.

High MAP scores and A grades in reading and writing are needed in grade 3 to be entered in the lottery for CES seats that start in grade 4. But those seats are vanishingly rare. Every year maybe 2-4 kids from our (quite large) ES are pulled and choose to go (for us it means changing schools: there are some schools that have a local CES, for which rules might be a little different). As others have said, CES sites do not have entry standards for math, only literacy. The usual compacted math classes are available at CES sites, though, so a CES kid can at a minimum expect to follow the ELC curriculum and have access to Math 4/5 and Math 5/6 if they need that, too. Some CES centers go beyond the ELC or apply it differently from what I've read here.

CES selection processes used to use additional inputs before covid. Whether those may return in the future is not clear to me. My DC of the right age earned a B in reading one quarter and so is out of the running anyway; my older DC qualified but never won a spot.

Fill it out. Last year my second-grader was identified as G&T based on his scores and parent recommendation. Teacher didn't recommend him. So the parent input made a difference.

Of course they don't do anything with that designation as far as I can tell. He's in third grade now and there's been no further mention other than receiving "enrichment" which ought to happen anyway based on the scores. I think they do another assessment in third? Not sure. I think they do some sort of lottery among kids who qualify, or something. It's been very unclear and we haven't done much research because his interests are not suited for the G&T program that is offered, which is the language arts program at another school. The only subject he actually likes and excels at without much effort is math so we would like to see him go into the compressed math track, but apparently that is done separately from the G&T testing and is offered at the home school. That's probably lottery-based too given the number of kids who surely qualify.

Current 2nd grade parent. Immersion program; haven’t seen a survey like this. Should we?

We filled it out, though according to the directions they gave for GT designation, it doesn't seem like our 7 yo will qualify, although she's 99th percentile on the math MAP, because her Dibels score wasn't that great. They had something (don't remember where) on how the kids could qualify for GT designation - they had to fulfill 3 or 4 criteria based on different tests + the behavioral questionnaire that the parents filled out or one filled out by the teacher. The tests included Dibels, math MAP, and some other math and English county tests that I believe we never got the results back on (so she may yet qualify, but I'm not counting on it). The math MAP cutoff was 80th percentile, so I'm a bit annoyed that DD probably won't qualify, but I'm also not sure it really matters.... (Her Dibels score also got dragged down by the "Decoding" part, where they read made-up-words, but her reading is actually really good, so I'm not concerned about it in the least.)

My kids are in HS now, and I actually hope there have been big changes! Although I'd bet it's still terrible and useless.

I have a background in survey research and found the questions so terrible, I refused to complete it. By the third time the teacher had to send it home, I felt bad because it shouldn't have been her problem, so I put a note that I declined to complete it.

I guess if it's just a bunch of dropdown menu choices, it isn't especially meaningful at this point. Seems more like they kept it to humor parents and at the same time create busy work since the feedback is basically not meaningful.

I think it is almost entirely MAP scores and grades.

I could access it easily enough, but it was just a form with input restricted to drop-downs.

I could swear in the past, I had to write more personal information about my older child.
