I read the studies linking dementia and made an appointment ASAP! I’m 52. I went to Costco. They have free hearing tests and the hearing aides aren’t super expensive. (Mine were around $1700 for both. My Mom went to an audiologist and they were trying to get her into $5,000 per ear (!!!!!) hearing aides.)

No one can see them. My husband didn’t even realize when I got them. And best part is I can listen to stuff on my phone. I’ve gotten through so many audiobooks just doing stuff around the house. (And no one can tell because no one can see them like you can with ear buds).

Super comfortable, even with glasses. Only issue I’ve had is taking off my mask I sometimes snag it and it falls off. But I’m getting better about remembering how to take the mask off without doing that.

47. I experienced sudden hearing loss. I literally went deaf in one ear in an instant. It was crushing because you don’t realize how much you need 2 ears to hear. I was happy to get mine (though technically mine is a CROS aid). I have never been self-conscious wearing them.

At about 50. Resisted and resisted til it became embarrassing. Someone would ask something and I could not hear and would answer something totally unrelated. Not a good look. I’m 61 now and still don’t like them. They don’t restore hearing. But help some.

If this is because you are worried about seeming old, consider that not being able to hear people also makes you seem old. I could tell my parents had hearing loss for about 8-10 years before they were willing to acknowledge it.

Can you say more about effort into adjustment?

My mom got them when my DD started talking, because she wanted to be able to understand her. Age 62. Really, it's a hassle to get them set up, but life is SO much better. You'll realize you were missing out on more than you think.

Two years ago at 52. One of the best decisions I ever made, and I’m kicking myself for not doing it a decade ago. I love being able to hear what people are saying without reading lips, and I’m much less annoyed with my mumbly family members and they with me. It was weird and startling at first to hear a new universe of sounds, especially my own footsteps, but you get used to it after a couple of months.

The kind I have (Oticon) are basically invisible and entirely comfortable.

My relatives needed them in their 70s.
My son and I need things repeated sometimes but that's because we have inattentive ADHD and low processing speed - nothing wrong with our hearing!
