We had a dog until recently. We both worked in person and had a dog walker. When we switched to remote work (pre covid) we kept the dog walker because it was really difficult to get away when the dog needed to go out. So I would wait until you are confident your schedule permits breaks to walk and play with the dog.

+1 the recommendation to get an adult rescue. You can also foster (temporary home). Or adopt a senior dog who may pass in a few years, though senior dogs do usually need more healthcare and sometimes more frequent meals and potty breaks.

Yes - but a puppy will take up ALL of your time. I can't imagine how you'd work with a puppy. Go for a young adult rescue and your dog will be grateful for your constant presence.

no because my cats would hate it. But if I didn't have other pets, I would. Probably I'd wait a month or two to settle in to the job and so I could housebreak during warmer weather.

Shorter lifespan breeds are also those with more health issues, in general, and higher veterinary costs and health needs while they are alive. Giant breeds, breeds with shortened airways (bulldogs), etc.--all tend to mean higher veterinary costs. The longer-lived breeds tend to have lower veterinary costs.

When you say shorter lifespans do you mean English bulldog or Great Dane?

It also depends on your situation at home.

For example, if you have a big fenced-in dog run or yard, that makes it easier. My parents had a huge fenced-in dog run.

Also, other family members. We walked the dogs when we got home from school once we were old enough.

I personally wouldn’t, because I don’t like dogs, but in your case I would give it at least a few months to settle in, see what the hours/expectations are, how flexible the job actually is, etc.

How long would you wait to be sure? Don’t want to wind up paying a lot in day care/walking fees down the road. Will also be looking at a breeds with shorter lifespans just in case.
