I would be able to clearly articulate why you feel you need private now and start calling schools in a few weeks to see if they will accept a late application. If you have a son with quick processing speed, maybe try St. Anselms Abbey. I believe they are less stringent on admissions deadlines as they are looking specifically for students with this.
Separately, there is a vocal contingent on this board who feel public math is stronger than private. I personally think that's debatable, but if math is truly your kids "thing", you may find more class options in public depending on which privates you are considering.
