Overheard a father grilling a skating coach about why the coach can't seem to bring "fire" and "passion" in his daughter when she is performing. Complaining that the daughter is "phoning it in" in competition, and he knows she can do better. Coach is reassuring that the daughter is winning, is where she needs to be, and he's proud of her, dad should be proud too. Dad is insistent if he doesn't see more "drive" he will find a new coach.

I see dad and daughter at next practice. Daughter is maybe 6 years old, complaining of stomach ache, doesn't want to practice that day. Dad tells her to take some tums and get out there, pulls out giant container and shakes out three.

There’s a PWSI dad of a soccer-playing 11yo girl who screamed like a crazy person the entire match. Her team lost, and we saw him chewing her out on the way to the car after. It was really sad.

Though this was last year, so I would not be surprised if she’s already quit the sport.

In the first travel soccer tournament my son played in as an 8 year old, a mom from the opposing team (from Baltimore) yelled to her son to punch one of our players in the face if he got fouled again. The ref, who was also the tournament organizer, heard her and told her she needed to leave the field. She cursed at him and shoved him before her husband dragged her away.

More funny than terrible, but the most cringe-worthy sports parent story was one I read on DCUM years ago. A poster had been at a youth soccer game and a mom from the opposing team was filming the game on her phone. She disagreed with a call the ref made and walked onto the field to try to show him the video clip that she said proved his call was wrong.

A parent who spit on my DD

A parent sending me a super nasty email as the team financial volunteer saying that he would not be paying his $300 share of fees for social activities and the coach gift (the club requires this for all players) because his son did not get the playing time he "paid for." He then called my personal cell phone and kept yelling that he refused to pay.
I'm a volunteer parent who does an excel spreadsheet to track payments.

I'm torn between this dad who coaches in rec leagues but is all about winning, his kid is also crazy. In first grade she threw down her softball mitt and screamed "Don't talk to me!" which was a moment. In 5th now and hasn't gotten better since. The dad is always arguing with refs, the other coach, etc.

Also my DD consistently beat one girl on the cross country team and her mom told her in hearing distance of other parents that she shouldn't be losing to my kid, who she characterized as not giving 100 percent at practice. For the rest of the season this kid would run a step behind mine and then beat her at the finish, one time by .03 seconds or something ridiculous like that. That mom I like in general settings but can't deal with her at sports games - our kids play a number of the same sports and I try not to sit by her.

Dad stormed onto the soccer field threatening the ref because he thought a foul should have been called. (His daughter was a flopper). He was ejected from the game. He literally picked up his daughter and carried her off the field after being ejected.

Dad threatened my son during a very physical game and we had to have a coach walk us to the cars after the game. Dad felt my son should have had fouls called, refs disagreed and thought my son was playing just fine, although aggressive. The parents of this opposing team arrived at the field with red solo cups which tells you something.

I witnessed one dad screaming at his kid during hockey travel try outs - literally yelling at his kid (who fell) to get up and get back in the game. It was awful. Of course it turns out that dad was a coach.

Uprooting the whole family for one child's travel sport. Younger kid could never make lasting school friendships because they always moved every few years for older child's sport. Older child isn't even that good!

I have heard of moms/dads getting arrested on athletic fields because they were yelling at kids from the other team inappropriately before.
