I read where she was asked and doubled down on the Iwo jima part. I had initially assumed she confused Iwo jima with Hiroshima. And, even if she had said Hiroshima, it will was inappropriate. She does go out of her way to slam the US.

My uncle was convinced that his life was saved by Hiroshima as he was a Marine in a force that was preparing for the invasion. He likely would have been in one of the first groups to land.

Given her context of Japanese Remembrance Day, I think it’s clear she meant Hiroshima.

As far as I recall, the holocaust was not perpetrated by the US, and she mentions that as well. She talks about the evil "humans' are capable of, not Americans, in reference to Japanese and Holocaust remembrance days.

Military historians do debate in hindsight whether the Battle of Iwo Jima was of sufficient strategic importance to have justified the many casualties.

Of course when Omeish makes her comments she rarely provides such context because she’s been surrounded her entire life by people who think you get extra credit in class for criticizing American policy. It goes over well at Yale, but not so well in other places.
