Is IU or Miami of Ohio known for either of these majors? If not, I would discourage, unless you have ample funds. I am skeptical of a communications degree. Hospitality seems more practical, if that's what she really wants to do. I would not pay top dollar, but I am cost conscious.

What is the Cost of Attendance per year for each school without any loans? (Tuition and fees, cost of room and board, cost of books, supplies, transportation, and miscellaneous expenses)

I would encourage IU over Miami because of location and quality, but if you got into JMU, want to stay East Coast and money is a factor, it makes sense to go there.

I am pretty frugal but I wouldn’t let $8k a year make a difference. Don’t be penny wise and pound foolish.

Also known for its media school, which is a link to the communications interest. Did she apply/get in to the media school?

They're both good schools. (I went to one for undergrad and the other for grad school, so I'm biased!) I suspect it won't make a huge difference in terms of career prospects which one she goes to.

My general sense is that Indiana is a better academic institution overall these days. It sounds like Miami has declined a fair amount in that regard since I went there 30 years ago. That's not based on anything more than acceptance rates really. I expect you can get a very solid education in either place.

I would say that IU has broader academic offerings if your daughter has varied interests and might want to pick up a minor or two or change majors at some point. Also, I don't know your financial situation, but if you're fairly well off, $12k more per year probably shouldn't be decisive.

Are you inquiring about "paying up" for Indiana when cheaper options are available? If you can afford, sure. Well respected school. We will likely be in a similar situation, by not taking the "cheapest" alternative. Yes, $50k is a chunk of money, but it's not like your paying $85k for some no name SLAC that's a glorified babysitter. Congratulations. Best of luck!!

That would be a hard no for me. Those are not specialized majors and i can’t see spending an extra $50k for that. If she wants to foot that portion of the hill, I’d help her get loans.
