I used to work for the DC Public Library System. A librarian's salary 'only' goes up to $85,000. Much of that time they are making $70,000 or below. And that's for a professional. I imagine other salaries are same there. The library assistants make less than $70,000 and there are alot of those trying to support families. That's my experience, OP.

House cleaners and construction workers paid in cash.
Single moms with 3+ kids who work part time or intermittently.

+1 There are a lot of people who don't have degrees, OP, and they make barely $30/hour, which amounts to something like $62K.

Half of the families in the US earn $75K or less. (Family doesn’t necessarily mean two wage earners.)

Where did you grow up?

Drive up to Pennsylvania and go to any of the economically depressed towns in PA. You will see plenty of families with that household income.
