It is meaningless. You could can get (very limited) enrichment regardless of this designation. Both my kids have it and it means nothing.

SIPPI (GT identification) happens in 2nd, repeats in 3rd, to pick up some not identified in 2nd, 5th (ditto) and 8th, I think (vould be 7th). Once identified, you don't lose the designation.

MD requires an identification process, but doesn't specify criteria.
MCPS posts criteria they use in their FAQ. Schools are supposed to provide enriched education to meet GT need, per MD law and MCPS policy.

It's not meaningless, but it can be made so if a particular school or teacher doesn't employ available enrichments well, and this varies widely in the county, with little, if any, oversight by MCPS, which provides the enrichment framework (might need to bolster that).

This is separate from qualification/selection for the criteria-based magnet programs (CES or magnet middles). Those have far too few seats to meet the need. GT enrichment is supposed to be available at any school in the system.

Not unless they are identified as highly gifted, which could get them into a program for grades 4 & 5.

There is no test anymore for this either. They just use MAP scores and grades.

We got a letter today from this office asking for student information as part of the GT identification process. DS is only in second grade. He’s been getting math enrichment at school (according to his report card - he says he just gets a separate sheet of problems to work on) and his MAP score has been very high. We are not very familiar with this process but thought the GT process (?) started later - or is this a standard form sent out to everyone? If not what is this form used for and what should we expect in terms of next steps? His reading/writing isn't that great though he’s on grade level. Any advice appreciated.
