What exactly would you say that wouldn’t make you sound like a complete idiot?

Say this out loud and see how this sounds:
“I’m noticing that you’ve only been here a week and you’re already calling out sick. I hope this doesn’t become a habit.”

See? You sound like the boss from hell, and if she had any sense, she’d quit.

Instead, just keep note of it. When/If a pattern forms, THEN you say something.

Impossible to make a judgment this early. Worry only if it becomes a more common occurrence.

Do you want her to get your whole family sick OP?

I think single moments are not anything. She can get a flat tire on the first day of work or never. She can get sick once this month or it could come three months from there. If she has been wonderful, I would assume that this is just what it is. Not even sure what you would "bring up" with her - please don't get sick? I would keep eyes / ears out for patterns or other things that are not up to what you want, but overall, a sick day can happen.

I think that the advice that someone suggested - letting her know how much you are care about germs, is important. I don't mind a sniffle, but more than that I want the person to stay home. I have seen people be ok with a medicated fever (which I would NEVER want someone with a fever working in my house) if the person wants to come in.

Tell her she has to come over and infect your whole house -- then you can cancel on her.

Do you think her immune system understands she just started a new job?

Let it go. Also how old is she?

I would set expectations: do you fear exposure to her germs and want her to stay away if she has any symptoms?

Or do you only want her to stay away if she is so sick she couldn’t do the job?

Both are reasonable and she probably doesn’t know which one you are.

It doesn’t look great but after school sitter are hard to find so I would give her the benefit of the doubt this one time.

We have a new after school babysitter who started last week. It's been less than a week but so far she's been wonderful. She texted today to say that she's not feeling well and would it be ok to take today off. I get being sick it just makes me worried that she's only been here a week and already asking for time off for being sick. Should I mention anything about it or just let it go.
