I read that they punctured the remaining cars (draining their contents) to relieve pressure. I'll try to find that information. If that's the case, it's going right into the ground.

How is that dealt with after the fact? Do they have to dig it up later and cart it away?

So scary. My neighborhood borders an industrial area with a big LNG facility and a freight line running by the facility (the LNG is trucked in). I can't even really think about it. And that area is less than a mile from the biggest hospital in the state.

I saw video of all the dead fish, and EPA comments acknowledged the gas was immediately fatal to fish, but why are people reporting other animals dying. Super surprised we didn't evacuate a larger radius with the size of the fires.

DMV is not that far away from Ohio, wondering if there is any monitoring on the water and air quality

I've seen a fair amount of coverage on CNN until the shooting today.

It’s a massive disaster that’s being severely underreported. I am adjacent to the Pittsburgh area (and about 90 miles from the burn/derailment) and local news is doing some coverage. People are suffering serious health effects, along with livestock. There is a fear of groundwater contamination.

The company is owned by Vanguard and Black Rock, so no surprise on the media blackout.

If folks want to discuss the environment aspects of the event in this thread while discussing the political aspects in the other, I think that is okay.

This is exactly what the rail workers were striking over. It was pay, but actually over safety.

They even brought up this point - imagine a train detailing with toxic chemicals in your neighborhood or city all because railways wanted to pinch pennies on labor to maximize profit.

This has been a huge deal for 4 days and I agree, insane that no one is discussing it.

Also, there were 2 more train derailments today, one in Texas and one in South Carolina. The one in Texas was also carrying hazardous materials but I’m not sure about the one in SC.

WSJ article:
https://www.wsj.com/articles/residents-of-village-near-ohio-train-derailment-begin-to-return-home-11675965939?page=1

If you are behind a paywall, here is the quote:
James Justice, an official with the U.S. EPA, said the decision to allow people to return home was based on “hundreds and hundreds of data points” showing the region’s air is safe.

“All of the readings we’ve been recording in the community have been at normal concentrations, normal backgrounds, which you find in almost any community,” he said.

An official with the state EPA said that some chemicals had reached local waterways and were immediately toxic to fish. He said that local drinking water hadn’t been affected, and that there would be ongoing monitoring, including along the Ohio River, which provides drinking water to many communities downriver.

I'm surprised there isn't a thread on this already. Have people seen the reports of farmers and people living outside of the mandatory evacuation zone are seeing livestock and animals die from the released vinyl chloride carcinogenic gas.

I have been distracted by all the UFO/Chinese balloon reports and haven't had been following the the train derailment. Is Norfolk Southern really only providing 25k to the town?
