NP from Fairfax. DS was just admitted to CS. Just curious if there is anything for kids NEAR campus. Route 1 between Beltway and campus looked a little rough. Although looked like of plenty new apartments just north of campus. Thanks.

I would completely disagree with this. There are a ton of activities on the weekend that are non greek. Maryland sports, club sports, music and theater. Parties, dances. Religious organizations and social action groups. If your child is bored at UMD, they have not tried to get involved.

My terp rarely comes home and we are 1/2 an hour away. He has a complete life in College Park- Club sport, fraternity, part-time on campus job, UMD sports fan. We go to CP to see him

UMD students we know only went home for holidays and family events, rarely any other time - they prefer staying on campus, sleeping until noon and hanging out with their friends. I would not consider it a commuter campus at all.

92% of freshmen live on campus, and third of upperclassmen do, too. That's over 12,000 living on campus, plus thousands more living in apartments just off campus. There's plenty to do whenever you want to do something: sports, intramurals, the gym, parties, clubs, music groups, going into DC, etc.

Maryland is not a commuter school. Most kids move into dorms and hang out in the community full time.

My brother and I almost never went home for the weekends. Family home was 30 minutes away

My child, not at UMD, visits their significant other at UMD at least 3 weekends per semester. Inwould say it's a happening place!

UMD is a high ranked(relatively) state flagship in a great location.

No need to worry about that.

I live a mile away and I never see my kid. Too much going on.

One good thing about a school in a more urban area is that you can go do things on the weekend. There are things to do off campus.

My kid won't be coming home on the weekends.

OP you're more likely to see that at UMBC which is more of a commuter school, UMD is not known as a commuter school at all.

My kid almost never came home on weekends. There was a lot to do. Same stuff as any other big school, plus the ability to take metro downtown to concerts, bars, shop, restaurants, museums.

Do most MD freshmen just end up going home on weekends? My oos DS likes UMD, but worried if him and the others oos kids would be the only ones hanging out on weekends.
