People pick random strangers as roommates to share the costs, why does it matter if it's someone they love and trust?

How do you not get a say in this if you are paying? Uh, that’s not how “adulting” works. If you are accepting others money (basically freeloading) you accept the conditions tied to it. Don’t like it? Take out a loan for 50k.

I went to a state school. I didn’t know anyone who did this. I wouldn’t allow it. They are too young for that and not on my dime.

If your child is threatening to drop out of college if you don't allow them to live with their boyfriend, you have some larger issue to address with them.

Only if they are pregnant. That's the only situation that I've heard of this.

I would allow it but tbh I wouldn’t reccommend it. It’s nice to have your own space. OTOH if housing is scarce/expensive maybe it makes sense

I never told my parents who my college roommates were. We split rent & tuition.

No point in having two rentals.

They can take your money and either let a partner live at their place or live at their place, all you get is peace of mind that you are controlling them with purse strings. If they are responsible and good for each other, why not? I guess better than drunk same sex friends. Also, how do you know if same sex roommate isn't their sexual partner. Unless they are living at your house, there is no way to monitor. We've seen people having all the sex they wanted during high school in their teens,controlling parents can be so naive.

Well, couples practically live at each other's places without sharing the cost so why not make it cost efficient. Even if they pay for two rooms at the dorm, its a lot of money wasted. I won't do it for freshman but seniors are 21 year old adults, why control them?
