Most of campus jobs and work-study give preference to kids on aid so not many left for others.

Some kids live right across from the school, others commute for an hour both ways. There are only so many hours in a day.

Not necessarily, workload, ability, activities, stress handling, circumstances can be very different for each kid. That being said, it can be a good lesson in learning to drop some baggage instead of breaking the back.

I guess there is no formula. All of us have seen both sort succeed, fail or be mediocre. What's important is what you do, not if its free or paid.

No, my kids don’t need my permission, but they could ask for my advice. Also this is a general discussion.
Most kids are NOT excelling at class work, paid work and volunteering at the same time. Have you ever participated in a real paper worthy research project? It takes a lot of time.

All of mine worked in college.
They had part-time jobs starting in sophomore or junior year depending on the kid.
They all worked summers and breaks for spending money at school.
We could afford for them not to work. They wanted to.
My kids do better busy.

At least work part time or during the summers so that the kid has some sort of work history before they go applying for internships and regular jobs.

If a kid has to work to pay for school, then they have to work. But I don’t think there’s any particular virtue in holding a paying job just for the sake of it during the semester if it doesn’t contribute to education or later job prospects like unpaid research/internship would.
