Nanny is definitely not going to be cheaper but depending on the nanny and the daycare, it could be within a few hundred bucks per month in the beginning. But as kids get older, nanny gets more expensive while daycare gets cheaper so in the long run, you save much more with daycare.

Family daycare is cheaper. If your provider is a preschool teacher that's a bonus. But I care about a caring and patient early Educator. That's more important for me and that my child is getting attention.

A nanny for two will be $28-32hr.
Time and a half for all hours over 40 in a week
10% of nanny's gross annual income in employer taxes
$750 per year for taxes and payroll
$750 per year for workers comp policy
$0.65/mile gas reimbursement
Plus money for all the activities your kids do with the nanny

How early did you do daycare?

Your elderly parents "keep an eye" on nanny?! Outrageous. You should not hire a nanny that you need to be policed by your old parents. I bet they drive her crazy

We did a nanny for our kids until they were 4 and 2, when we switched to daycare.

Definitely not cheaper, but worth the additional money for coming home to bathed and fed kids, and not having to take off work every time they had colds.

Not cheaper. It’s supposedly easier but from the IRL stories I don’t know if it’s true. I never did a nanny for my three kids under five and never really regretted it. But others swear by it - it’s personal preference, but nanny will still be slightly more money.

They will tell you. I'm fine with it. My job raises my salary too.

Family daycare is cheaper. You gotta deal with taxes for nanny, where to send them if there's a rainy day, bad weather.

Where to send them if there is a rainy day??? Isn’t the point of a nanny that they work at your house and you don’t have to plan the outings?

It’s not cheaper but the price increase is small enough that it’s worth it.

All in (taxes, workers comp, everything), we pay $5000 a month for our nanny (she makes $25 per hour). The cheapest daycare for an infant we could find is $2300. For a toddler, $1900. So that would be $4200. It’s worth the extra money. So much better.

The math lands on its head if you need overtime though. That’s only 40 hours a week for the nanny. Daycares have longer hours and nannies get time and a half for all hours over 40 a week.

Its not cheaper even at $22 an hour whihc is what we paid 2 years ago. But worth every penny. Not drop offs or pickup and kids sleep in own beds on their own nap schedules And the much lower incidence of sickness is way worth it.

No but the logistics are waaaaay easier and it's worth it when your kids are that little. Do not underestimate the massive inconvenience of hustling a baby and a toddler out to daycare. Not to mention the additional illness and time off from work with daycare (times two!). We could barely afford a nanny and I do not regret a single penny we spent on that. Best thing I did for my sanity for my kids during that time.

I am expecting a second child, who will be born when DS is 2 yrs. I was planning to put DS in daycare starting at age 2, but now with a second on the way, I am wondering if it will be cheaper to hire a nanny to watch two kids instead of paying two daycare tuitions (I understand that infants cost significantly more/month). Opinions? I am in DC area and I am told the going rate is $25-30/hr for a nanny.
