If that is the whole grain bread you are buying, then yes, homemade with white flour is better.

If you can home make your bread (white or wheat), then buy better. Ezekiel bread is a great choice for whole grain (usually in freezer), or a local artisan bakery. Check the Bread Baker's Guild for a list of good quality local bakers.

Some other good store bought breads: Trader Joe's organic baguettes and chibatta loaves are just a flour, water, salt, yeast. If there is a international market or middle eastern market near you, the flat pita loaves are super cheap and they have whole wheat. 100% Whole wheat, water, salt, yeast, that is it.

I hate to break it to you but sugar’s likely to be fourth or so on a homemade bread recipe too. Bread doesn’t need a lot of ingredients. My sandwich loaf ingredients lists would be something like: white flour, wheat flour, milk, sugar, oil, yeast, salt. Just because something’s the fourth ingredient doesn’t mean there’s a lot of it. I guess sourdough is simpler: flour, water, starter/yeast, salt.

I make bread but also buy it because those preservatives have a very important role in keeping sandwich bread edible. The quality of home made stuff might be better the first couple days, but won't keep as well.

Interesting question which I never considered previously. Disclosure, we buy wheat or multigrain bread at the store. But I think I’d answer your question that I consider healthier homemade white bread made with good ingredients. You can get fiber other ways, better to eat fresh and minimal processing in reasonable quantities.

No. I'm not sure why it's really bad, unless you have to really avoid sugar. Do you all never eat a piece of cake, or a cookie? I feel like the small amounts of sugar in a healthier brand of whole wheat bread can't be such a huge problem unless you're eating several slices a day? But I could be off base here. I'm actually prediabetic due to genetics and on medication. I still buy bread from the grocery store and eat small amounts of regular peanut butter, jelly, a cookie or chocolate here and there-- define it cutting it out entirely. That's like watching tv in black and white.

Forth ingredient is sugar. That’s really bad. Your bread isn’t supposed to be dessert. Do homemade.

The thread about bread recipes has me wondering: what do you consider to be healthier, 1) store-bought whole grain/whole wheat bread or 2) homemade white bread w/ minimal ingredients/no preservatives, but made with white flour?

We buy Arnold Whole Wheat bread, the ingredients are listed below.

Whole Wheat Flour, Water, Bulgur Wheat, Sugar, Wheat Gluten, Honey, Soybean Oil, Yeast, Whole Wheat, Cultured Wheat Flour, Salt, Soy Lecithin, Grain Vinegar, Natural Flavors, Citric Acid.
