Increased carjackings is a very scary problem all over the city, not limited to DTSS by any means. I think it’s basically because it’s harder to steal/drive empty cars. We need the technology for carjacking deterrents to catch up. They’re not selling the cars for parts, they’re just driving them around and dumping them. It’s so stupid and scary. We need to make catching and prosecuting those young people much easier because I think what’s happening now is they have too high a chance of getting away with it.

You say it is more sketchy by NH/University - is that based on your knowledge of crime stats for that specific area relative to other areas? Why do you say that?

Except that's more like 5 miles along a highway with tony Chevy Chase in between.

Most of Takoma Park is safe and walkable. Closer to the major roads - New Hampshire and University the crime goes up.

If you are talking about the part of TKPK within, say, a mile or so of the metro, that is pretty safe. I live in TKPK and have kids who walk all over town. I am not scared of anything happening to them other than being hit by a car, but that can be anywhere.

Yea anywhere in TPK that you have a street full of SFH it is safe. Kids play and walk alone. Parks are safe as well. TPK also has it’s own police force so there is always a watchful eye nearby.

We moved from Columbia Heights to TKPK’s historic district in 2019 and it was a breath of fresh air in terms of safety. It can get a little sketchy once you get to the area near New Hampshire / University, though.

It's definitely going to feel safer than, say, Petworth or Columbia Heights or Brightwood or Capitol Hill.

But there are some shootings in the part near PG county, some violence near the metro and 4th street and off of Maple in the past year, and armed robberies of mail carriers in the historic district. So it's not Potomac or Bethesda, as PPs said. We have experienced a lot of car break-ins on a "cute" street but no house break-ins or violence.

I guess it depends on your relative position.

Probably safer than inside the city limits but nowhere near as safe as a Potomac, North Bethesda, and Bethesda.

Is Takoma Park safe? Thinking of moving there from DC due to increase in crime (shootings), but then I am not sure how safe TP is. Are there any areas in TP more safe than others? I will moving with small kids (older is 6 y/o), so safety and schools are our priorities. Thanks!
