The girl took UNC up on the offer. No legacy.

She never finished school.

Ah, so it’s a way not to make donors mad. In most cases, students probably make friends and don’t want to transfer so the school never had to say no and they didn’t make their donor angry.

And UChicago.

Boston University offered this last year as well.

USC (University of Southern California) uses it mainly for legacies as well.

Some schools offer it to students who would otherwise be waitlisted, Cornell uses this a lot.

There are some mentions of it on College Confidential and most of them say they are legacies too. So, that seems to be a big factor in the offer.

I also have heard of a double legacy who was offered this and did wind up transferring.

The one kid I know who was offered UNC's option was a legacy, had great test scores, very strong rigor but some weakness in GPA due to health issues junior year. He's at Virginia Tech now and decided not to take the transfer.

It apparently is something that is offered by the school to a small number of applicants, but a student cannot request it.

Can anyone explain how someone can gain the sophomore guarantee to a school like UNC Chapel Hill? This was brought up in the USC post and I didn’t know about this until today. What declined applicants are offered this and what are they looking for? Is this different from a wait list?
